For the first time in nearly a quarter century, the Seattle Mariners are champions of the American League West.
And with just one more win, they’ll seal up a first-round bye and homefield advantage in the ALDS.

Cal Raleigh homered twice to reach the 60 on the season, and the Mariners put up five runs in the first two innings and never looked back while cruising to a 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies to clinch their first division title since 2001.
Raleigh hit a solo home run two batters into the bottom of the first, Julio Rodríguez made it back-to-back solo shots three pitches later, and Jorge Polanco tacked on another solo homer to make it 3-0.
Raleigh drove in two more runs with a double in the second. Randy Arozarena’s sac fly and Josh Naylor’s RBI single made it 7-1 in the fourth. And Eugenio Suárez added a solo home run to go up 8-1 in the seventh.
Raleigh reached the historic 60-homer mark in the eighth inning, pulling a solo blast into the seats in right field for a 9-1 lead.
Luis Castillo turned in a brilliant performance on the mound to earn the win, striking out a season-high 10 while allowing only one run and one hit.
After winning for the 16th time in their past 17 games during a scorching run, Seattle sealed its fourth division championship in franchise history (also 1995, 1997 and 2001).

In the process, the Mariners ended the Houston Astros’ run of four straight division titles and seven straight in full-length seasons, which began in 2017. The only season Houston didn’t win the AL West during its run of division dominance was the COVID-shorted 2020 campaign.
Seattle, which clinched its sixth-ever playoff berth with a 4-3 comeback win over Colorado on Tuesday, can seal up the AL’s No. 2 seed for the playoffs with a win or a Cleveland Guardians loss Thursday.
The Mariners’ also improved their slim chances of overtaking the No. 1 seed in the AL, which currently belongs to the Toronto Blue Jays (90-68) and New York Yankees (90-68), who are tied as the co-AL East leaders. The Mariners are one game behind both teams but need to make up two games over each due to losing head-to-head tiebreakers.
