Millie Bobby Brown is close to landing a role as an American sports icon for Netflix.
The Stranger Things standout is in final negotiations to star as Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug in director Gia Coppola‘s feature Perfect. Brown would also join the film’s producing team.
Coppola (The Last Showgirl) is helming the movie from a script by Ronnie Sandahl. The project is based on the real-life U.S. women’s gymnastics team’s historic success at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta.
Netflix is eyeing a 2026 shoot for Perfect. Producers include Nik Bower for Riverstone Pictures and Thomas Benski for Magna Studios. 30West is executive producing.
Known as the Magnificent Seven, the American women’s gymnastics team collected its first-ever team gold at the 1996 Olympics. Strug clinched the individual gold for the vault despite landing on an injured ankle, and the image of coach Béla Károlyi carrying the athlete to the podium became a signature moment for those Summer Games.
The team also included Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Dominique Dawes, Amy Chow, Jaycie Phelps and captain Amanda Borden.
Perfect continues Brown’s longstanding relationship with the streaming service, which includes such films as the Enola Holmes franchise, Damsel and The Electric State. The actress originated her breakout role of Eleven on the smash Netflix series Stranger Things when the show debuted in 2016. Its fifth and final season is set to be released later this year in three parts.
Coppola, the granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola and niece of Sofia Coppola, has previously directed the features Palo Alto (2013), Mainstream (2020) and the Pamela Anderson-led The Last Showgirl (2024).
