Cowboys’ Matt Eberflus is officially out of lifelines after Giants’ QB bombshell

The Dallas Cowboys’ defense, led by new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, has been nothing short of humiliating in the last two weeks. Russell Wilson and Caleb Williams lit this secondary on fire in what became an overtime win and blowout loss against the New York Giants and Chicago Bears, respectively.

While Eberflus supporters have been claiming that he is the victim of a thin roster who can’t enact his ideal vision for this unit, the latest roster move from one of Dallas’ division rivals makes Eberflus’ performance look even worse for everyone involved.

The Giants decided that it was time to bench Wilson, who was intercepted twice and mustered just nine points in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, and move on ahead with Jaxson Dart as the team’s new QB1.

This came one week after Wilson beat up the Cowboys to the tune of 450 passing yards and three touchdowns, which made some fans out there believe that Wilson may have found a new home in Brian Daboll’s offense. He regressed to the mean the literal second he wasn’t going up against Eberflus.

To be a bit fair to Eberflus, he did come into the year thinking he was going to coach Micah Parsons. A unit that was already being propped up by Parsons when he was in town has now disintegrated before Eberflus’ eyes, and he doesn’t have the personnel to fix those issues.

However, some performances are beyond the pale. Wilson may have well have been playing like he did during his prime with Seattle during that Week 2 game, and Williams uncorked the best game of his career against Dallas’ secondary. Eberflus’ scheme is quickly looking to be outdated in the modern NFL.

Not only is Eberflus refusing to change up a scheme that operates almost exclusively in zone coverage, but he is doing so with a very thin secondary that has seen starters like Kaiir Elam and Trevon Diggs string together some of the worst games of their respective careers.

The Cowboys will need to get through Jordan Love and a motivated Green Bay Packers team, but they have two games against very beatable opponents in the Jets and Panthers coming up. If Eberflus struggles again, the seat might get hot enough to the point where some big changes happen.
