Dawson’s Creek Reunion Includes Iconic Hollywood Filmmaker & Broadway Star

A recent reunion event for Dawson’s Creek brought together the beloved cast and crew of the iconic teen drama series, although the lead actor, James Van Der Beek, was absent. The event featured a surprise appearance by Steven Spielberg and included a live reading of the show’s 1998 pilot episode. Created by Kevin Williamson, Dawson’s Creek aired on The WB from January 1998 to May 2003. Following its debut, the series became one of the network’s flagship shows, alongside Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 7th Heaven.

Michelle Williams, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, John Wesley Shipp, Mary Beth Peil, Mary-Margaret Humes, Meredith Monroe, Kerr Smith, Busy Philipps, and Nina Repeta appeared on stage at the Richard Rodgers Theater to do a reading of the 1998 pilot episode of Dawson’s Creek. They were joined by notable filmmaker-composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, who stood in for James Van Der Beek.

Van Der Beek was originally scheduled to attend the event. However, he backed out after contracting two stomach viruses, which he confirmed on Instagram, in addition to Miranda’s presence. In the post, he shared that he had been looking forward to the event, which Williams had been planning in January.

The reading, narrated by Renée Elise Goldsberry, was a fundraiser for F Cancer and Van Der Beek, who was battling colorectal cancer. The latter appeared in two separate video messages played on the theatre screen before and after the reading.

In the first one, he expressed dismay at not getting to hug his fellow castmates on stage. “I wanted to stand on that stage and thank every single person in this theater for being here tonight,” he added (via Variety).

Meanwhile, in the second video message, the CSI: Cyber actor drew a parallel between Dawson and “Phantom of the Opera,” acknowledging how “nobody in their right mind” would do this. He noted that both faced the reality of unrequited love.

“‘Go to him. Go to him now before I change my mind.’ Only one resulted in a crying face meme,” Van Der Beek shared. He then introduced Norm Lewis, who performed “The Music of the Night.”

Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, established as Dawson’s hero in the series, made a surprise appearance via video message.

He said, “Dawson, you made it. Maybe someday, I will get to have a Dawson’s closet.”
