The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense came away with a number of questions from Sunday night’s victory over the New York Giants. On Monday, head coach Andy Reid was waiting to answer them.
While it was nice to see K.C. put one in the victory column for the first time in 2025, Patrick Mahomes still had trouble moving the chains given the lack of playmakers around him. At one point, tight end Travis Kelce had yet another emotional outburst on the sideline and got into a verbal spat with Reid in front of cameras.
Reid addressed the confrontation in his opening remarks to the press on Monday following Week 3, offering up a response without being asked. Clearly, Reid knew what reporters were thinking.
The Chiefs head coach answered several offensive-related questions on Monday.
“Is he frustrated or not frustrated? Well, he’s seen how the offense works, and so when things aren’t going the right way, he’s very aware of that,” said Reid after bringing up Kelce’s sideline rant. “He’s a pretty smart guy and he’s been doing it longer than anybody else on this team who’s been doing it, so he wants to make sure that he gets that point across to the guys, and so he does that. I’m okay with that part.
“He knows also, like the coaches know, where we can go with this, too, and the growth that we can have here, and we need to take care of business in that area.”
Following the explanation of his interaction with Kelce, Reid took several questions about the team’s wide receivers, starting with why Xavier Worthy was held out after reports were trending toward his return to the field against the Giants after suffering a shoulder injury early in Week 1.
“[Worthy] was real positive coming in,” said Reid. “Mentally, he was saying, ‘I’m gonna play in the game,’ which you’ve gotta kinda take that approach with that kind of injury and he did. He practiced and did the best he could, but it just wasn’t right. So between Xavier and the doctors and so on, we thought it best that he didn’t play.”
In the wake of Worthy’s unexpected absence, Chiefs fans were excited to see the potential debut of Jalen Royals, the team’s fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Utah State. Royals had been inactive for the first two games of the season as he continued to deal with knee tendinitis. However, despite being active, Royals stood next to coaches on the sideline for 60 minutes.
“Jalen just came back, so I had him there as kind of an emergency in case we absolutely needed him, but his first week of practice in a month was last week and he’s a rookie and so on,” said Reid. “So this is first game of suiting up. You can figure out the rest of it, but he’ll continue to work in there. But it’s great to have him back.”
Speaking of receivers coming back, Rashee Rice is allowed to return to Arrowhead as terms of the suspension change at this point. While Rice won’t be allowed back on the field in any capacity in Week 7, he can finally join his teammates for meetings, film study, etc.
“We do get four [Rice’s uniform number] back, and I know the guys will be fired up about that to see him. He can’t practice. He can’t be on the field, but he can do the other stuff. Just having him around, he’s a good positive energy to have around,” said Reid.
Chiefs Kingdom can only hope the receivers can continue to make their way back as the team returns to practice in preparation for a home game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4. As one of the toughest games on the schedule, it’s a chance to make a statement after two early season losses. But Mahomes is going to need as many weapons as he can in order to get the job done.
