The Cowboys lost star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb early in the first quarter of Sunday’s 31-14 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Cowboys chief operating officer and co-owner Stephen Jones confirmed Lamb suffered a high-ankle sprain during a radio appearance Monday on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM).
“Every one of those are different,” Jones said of Lamb’s injury. “We’d love to have him back for Green Bay (next week). But at the same time, we also got to understand the injury is what it is, and it’ll play out.”
A person familiar with the situation told The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins that the Cowboys are thinking it’s a two-to-four week injury timeline for Lamb.
On the play the injury occurred, Bears linebacker Noah Sewell fell on Lamb’s foot and ankle during a tackle after the receiver took a handoff from Dak Prescott in the backfield.
After the game, Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer had said Lamb sprained his ankle on the play, but more tests and imaging would be needed to determine an official prognosis.
The Cowboys offense would struggle throughout the game against the Bears without their top weapon in the fold, and George Pickens serving as the team’s top wideout.
“I think it changes quite a bit when you’re able to have both (Lamb and Pickens) out there. It’s a huge plus,” Jones said.
“Certainly, Pickens can do a great job for us in the (No. 1) role. But I think everything, you know, takes one step back from there. I think (KaVontae) Turpin is doing a great job for us. But you know, when you got all three of those guys out there, it’s a lot for the defense to take a look at. … But you know, when you miss a player like CeeDee, it certainly makes a difference.”
Lamb briefly returned to the game to start the second quarter, but was only on the field for a single play before hobbling back to the sideline.
Lamb was initially deemed questionable to return, before the Cowboys officially ruled him out when the second half began.
Briefly: Jones was also not concerned about the injury status of Trevon Diggs. The cornerback was on the team’s injury report prior to the Chicago game with a knee issue but was able to play. He also suffered a shoulder injury in the second half but checked back into the game.
