Washington Capitals announce roster for first preseason game against Boston Bruins

The Washington Capitals will get their preseason slate of games underway against the Boston Bruins on Sunday evening.

After three days of on-ice work at training camp, head coach Spencer Carbery will get his first look at players in game action. The Capitals will travel up to Boston for the 5 pm faceoff at TD Garden.

The team’s roster will be made up of a mix of core veterans, recent draft picks, AHL veterans, and players looking to make a full-time leap to the NHL this fall.

Included in the group are nine players who featured in a game for the Capitals last season:

• Brandon Duhaime
• Nic Dowd
• Hendrix Lapierre
• Ethen Frank
• Ivan Miroshnichenko
• Anthony Beauvillier
• Trevor van Riemsdyk
• Logan Thompson

Milano will get into a game for the Caps for the first time in almost a year, playing just three times last season before an injury and a setback in the spring ended his campaign.

The game will be most fans’ first look at defenseman Declan Chisholm, one of just two brand-new NHL players that the Capitals acquired over the summer. Chisholm, 25, has played in 99 career NHL games for the Minnesota Wild and Winnipeg Jets.

Lynden Lakovic, an early camp standout and the team’s most recent first-round pick, as well as Eriks Mateiko, Ryan Chesley, Leon Muggli, and Garin Bjorklund, make up the prospect contingent of the roster.

“[The first preseason game] is tough because you’re always balancing the scrambly play, which you’re gonna expect is going to be there, but you would like to see some semblance of the things that you’ve done and talked about this week,” Carbery said Saturday. “The other two pieces that I look for are competitiveness, and then show your skill set. Then you evaluate that postgame and [say], ‘Was this player able to do any of these things or all of them?’”

Carbery ran most of Sunday’s roster through line rushes at Saturday’s skate, giving them a practice together before traveling to Boston.

Projected Capitals lineup for preseason opener

Two of the forward lines have experience playing as a unit, as Ethen Frank skated with Dowd and Duhaime on Carbery’s fourth line ahead of the trade deadline last season. Miroshnichenko, Henrik Rybinski, and Bogdan Trineyev were also an oft-used trio by Hershey Bears head coach Todd Nelson.

Sunday evening’s matchup will be televised on Monumental Sports Network. The Capitals will play six total preseason games this fall against four different teams.

All other Capitals players not involved in the game will practice and scrimmage at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. The team is then scheduled to have a full day off on Monday.
