The cause of a long crack along Smith Street in Woodbridge Township two weeks ago is no longer a mystery.
Middlesex County engineers determined that the crack was caused by nearby construction of a logistics center along the Raritan River, officials said in a statement.
“Middlesex County engineers in conjunction with Woodbridge Township have determined that the crack on Smith Street was caused by construction activity by others in the adjacent property development,” officials said.
The crack has been filled in with asphalt to temporarily stabilize the area to avoid further damage from weather, officials said.
The county is still evaluating the damage using engineering data to assess the next steps for reconstruction, officials said
Eighteen families were evacuated from an adjacent residential neighborhood after the crack appeared on Sept. 4 and officials have said that the entire road will need to be rebuilt.
The families quickly returned to their homes following the incident and sensors were installed to monitor additional shifting, officials said.
Construction on the Raritan River Logistics Center on the other side of Smith Street broke ground on June 18 and is expected to be a nearly 1-million-square-foot warehouse with office space and public access to an adjacent waterfront park.
The 95-acre site is located in Woodbridge Township and Perth Amboy, and is being developed by Brookfield Properties and M+H Architects. The project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2026.
A representative from Brookfield Properties did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
