‘Quit Game and Restart’: Borderlands 4 Runs Worse the Longer You Play on All Consoles

Update []: Technical experts Digital Foundry has now shared its verdict on the performance of Borderlands 4 across PS5 Pro, base PS5, and the Xbox Series X|S systems, and it agrees the looter shooter is facing issues under the hood.

The idea that performance worsens the longer you play is vindicated during the analysis, and it’s an issue that affects all the platforms Borderlands 4 is currently available on. After about an hour of play, that’s when you’ll start encountering frame rate problems on the current build, according to Digital Foundry. This is specifically on the Performance Mode, but it’s not ruled out that the Quality Mode may also face the same issue given enough time.

Original Story: The technical issues that have plagued Oblivion Remastered since its launch appear to be flaring up in recent release Borderlands 4, also, as PS5 players report of worse performance the longer they play.

With suggestions the new looter shooter is also suffering from memory leaks, it is the PS5 Pro console that’s apparently throwing up wild variations in frame rates.

Players have reported that restarting the PS5 application temporarily fixes the fluctations in frame rate after some long play sessions, leading many to believe it is indeed a memory leak affecting Borderlands 4.

Gearbox Software lead Randy Pitchford agrees with the temporary fix, suggesting a workaround to be to “quit [the] game and restart”. The developer is aware of the technical fault and is actively working on a PS5 patch to fix things.

Performance issues have also plagued the PC version of Borderlands 4, and Pitchford went as far as to tell frustrated buyers to get a refund from Steam if they’re not content with waiting for updates. Sony’s refund policy is slightly stricter than the PC platform’s, so you may have to wait for those patches on PS5 rather than asking for your money back.

We’re still working on our Borderlands 4 PS5 review, after being issued with console code the day before release. The general reception of the PC version was positive, with the Metacritic average settling on an 84. The user score on the site, however, is at an alarming 46 due to the aforementioned flaws affecting the PC edition.
