ICE fires chemical agents at Broadview protest: Live updates

After bringing protesters lunch, woman watches immigration officers fire tear gas

Esmeralda Valencia brought lunch to some of the Broadview protesters.

“And while we were lunching, we were just watching them [agents] shooting everyone,” Valencia said. “They were just protesting, trying to advocate for these immigrants that have done nothing wrong, no criminal record, and they’re getting shot at.

“It’s horrible, it’s inhumane, it’s not right. And then … just because we’re speaking up — that’s not right,” she said.

Valencia moved to Chicago from California six years ago.

“It [hits] close to home because in California there are so many immigrants. They’re always giving you a helping hand, never asking you for anything in return, “ she said.

That’s been her experience in Chicago, as well. So she felt it was important to come out to show support.

“Any opportunity that I have to drive around and alert the community [about ICE] , I will,” she said. “I’m going out there. I’m driving around. Anytime I see anyone, I will stop. I will alert the community. That’s what we’re doing right now.
