A lockdown at the University of North Carolina is clear Thursday night after the school received unconfirmed reports of a person with a gun on campus earlier in the evening.
Students at the school told WRAL News they received the alert to shelter in place around 6:30 p.m. after rumors of a gunman began spreading on X and Snapchat.
“All these group chats are blowing up about how there’s a shooter on campus,” said one student, who wished to remain anonymous out of concern for their safety. “Apparently some of the freshmen dorms have been raided and the police have been all over campus.”
The school announced on X around 9:50 p.m. that it was a false alarm and gave the all clear, adding it would have more details on class cancelations and operations.
This is not the first time in the last month of false reports of a shooting. In August, a report of a shooting at Villanova University and The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga forced the schools into a lockdown.
Rev. Peter M. Donohue, president of Villanova, later said the report was a “cruel hoax,” while officials at Chattanooga said the campus was safe after four hours.
