It’s safe to say Oscar De La Hoya was not impressed with Canelo Alvarez’s performance against Terence Crawford.
In the marquee main event that aired on Netflix, Canelo lost a unanimous decision across 12 rounds despite Crawford moving up three weight classes to take the fight. While scorecards didn’t reflect a blowout, most experts believed Crawford won in lopsided fashion after he continuously stung Canelo with combinations and then showed off his defensive tactics to avoid any real damage in return.
After promoting Canelo for much of his career, De La Hoya says he saw this coming from a mile away and predicted that Crawford would pull off a nearly flawless victory.
“God it makes me horny to tell you I told you so,” De La Hoya said on Instagram. “I predicted the Canelo-Crawford fight like a godd*amn fortune teller. Canelo’s feet were cemented on the canvas and he was hitting air. What the f*ck was that?
“Props to Crawford. He came up three weight classes and fought a beautiful fight. What a great performance. Like taking candy from a baby. He just played with Canelo. Made him look silly and before you start with your shit about Canelo being old, just know that Crawford is older! That’s not an excuse here.”
It’s true that Crawford is older than Canelo and he actually walked into the main event as an underdog but ultimately showed he was the superior boxer.
That said, De La Hoya claimed this was just another example of how overrated Canelo has been throughout his career while facing less than stellar competition.
In fact, De La Hoya believes Canelo has lost to the three best boxers he’s faced during his career and that shows he’s not as great as everyone makes him out to be.
“Look, I promoted Canelo his entire career and it was a huge flub,” De La Hoya said. “The only real fighters he’s faced were [Floyd] Mayweather, [Dmitry] Bivol and Crawford and they all toyed with him.
“Even Mayweather knew Crawford was going to school him. He put $50,000 on Crawford to win.”
Of course, De La Hoya’s feelings about Canelo are well known after a contentious split between them as fighter and promoter led to a lawsuit being filed a few years ago.
Now De La Hoya is obviously enjoying his victory lap after watching Canelo lose arguably the biggest fight of his career after falling to Crawford this past Saturday night.
During his tirade, De La Hoya also took aim at UFC CEO Dana White, who officially crossed over into boxing promotion with the Canelo vs. Crawford fight.
In particular, the retired boxing champion scoffed at White insulting a reporter at the pre-fight press conference after he was pushed on TKO Group Holding — parent company to the UFC and the new Zuffa Boxing organization — supporting the Muhammad Ali Revival Act, which aims to bring UFC style promotion to the sport of boxing.
“Dana White didn’t have his best week,” De La Hoya said. “His t-shirt shrank smaller every minute, especially when he was questioned about amending the Muhammad Ali Act.
“So you’re saying this reporter’s an asshole because he’s asking a legitimate question? That’s because the Muhammad Ali Act protects fighters and TKO needs it to change so they can f*ck fighters over.”
