49ers news: Jake Moody signs with the Bears practice squad

Ahead of Thursday Night football, the Washington Commanders signed former San Francisco 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Commanders punter Tress Way suffered a back injury during Week 1, so there was a potential need for a backup. Adam Peters went with a familiar face and his former fourth-round pick. Wishnowsky didn’t punt on Thursday and remained on the practice squad.

On Friday morning, another former 49ers special teamer found a new home. Jake Moody, who was waived the day after missing a field goal, is signing with the Chicago Bears’ practice squad, per Jordan Schultz.

Chicago’s starting kicker, Cairo Santos, was 1-for-2 on Monday Night Football, missing his lone attempt from 50+ yards. So what do the Bears do? Go out and get a guy who hit the left upright from 27 yards in Week 1. This same kicker missed more (5) than he made (4) from 50+ in 2024, and was only 54.5 percent from 40-49 yards last year.

Moody figures to rebound. There’s a better chance that he ends up being an above-average kicker for the rest of his career than a below-average one, factoring in the law of averages and how he’ll have opportunities over the coming years. But the 49ers couldn’t risk losing with Moody the way he was kicking for them.
