The San Francisco 49ers’ injury report for Week 2 is out. Here’s who won’t practice today:
RB Christian McCaffrey (calf, vet day)
OT Trent Williams (knee, vet day)
DE Nick Bosa (vet day)
WR Jauan Jennings (shoulder)
DL Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
QB Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder)
And now the limited players:
RB Jordan James (finger)
WR Jordan Watkins (ankle)
Ben Bartch (knee/elbow)
Kyle Shanahan said it is a “long shot” that quarterback Brock Purdy would play this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. He also confirmed that it’s possible Purdy could miss multiple games, reiterating that his toe injury was worse than his shoulder.
Shanahan believes Purdy hurt his toe sliding:
Shanahan said he was aware that Brock was playing through both injuries during the game.
“Mac knows how to play the position. He plays well in the pocket. He distributes the ball well, sees coverages well, can play fast in there. He’s got a lot of good film from the NFL with his experience and obviously college. A tough guy who will hang in there and deliver it where it needs to go.”
The 49ers are still debating whether or not they’re going to add another quarterback, per Shanahan:
We’d love to have three quarterbacks available and ready to go. We still got Brock, but he’s not going right now. We have some roster issues where he can’t bring in one right away.
Shanahan said the team is trying to bring in a tight end now. As for a quarterback, he said, “We don’t know if we can.” That sounds like the 49ers will likely move forward with Jones as the starter while Purdy heals. It’ll be a matter of whether another quarterback is added to the roster. Shanahan sees similarities in Jones and Purdy:
They’re real similiar in how they play the game. They’re both extremely tough. They both can distribute the ball. I don’t know who has a faster 40. Brock could say he’s a little bit better of a scrambler. But they’re close to similar.
Purdy saved the offensive line a few times in Week 1 with his scrambling ability.
Wide receiver Jauan Jennings has a chance to play on Sunday. Jones will need every receiving threat he can get, especially if he faces the same kind of pressure that Brock did in Week 1.
