Coming off their most challenging practice of the summer in terms of length and overall intensity, the New England Patriots took things slower on Tuesday. The 11th practice of this year’s training camp was once again a walkthrough, the third of the summer so far.
You can recap the action, or the lack thereof, here. And as always, here is a rundown of who caught our eyes for better or worse.
With the Patriots opting for a walkthrough setting rather than one focused on competition, we will again not name a standout performer of the day. While there certainly were some aspects worth highlighting, no individual player did enough to receive that honor — a direct result of the setup rather than the players themselves.
Other performances of note
WR Javon Baker: The second-year wide receiver appears to be trending in the right direction. After hauling in three touchdowns from backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs in 7-on-7 work on Monday, he was among the group of wideouts working with starter Drake Maye on Tuesday. He was part of a group that also featured Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams.
OT Marcus Bryant: With starting right tackle Morgan Moses absent, the Patriots again turned to seventh-round rookie Bryant to help replace him. While he still remains in a competition with fellow offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs for a top backup role, the youngster getting added starter-level snaps can be seen as an encouraging development.
CB Carlton Davis III: Yes, it’s a walkthrough, but it was still promising to see Davis see a noticeable uptick in reps. The free agency pickup, who has been on and off the field all summer so far, was a mainstay on the outside and slid right into the starter role he was signed to play. Based on Tuesday, his return to full action seems to be nearing.
CB D.J. James: Even with Carlton Davis returning to practice, D.J. James remained prominently featured in the starting secondary. Sharing reps with the nominal CB4, Alex Austin, on the perimeter, he did not get a chance to showcase his knack for finding the football. However, the mere fact that he did not see his reps drop off significantly with Davis back in the lineup seems to bode well for his outlook.
The Patriots will be back at work on Wednesday for their first joint practice of the summer. Ahead of their preseason meeting, the Washington Commanders will be in town for one session that is set to begin at 10:15 a.m. ET. Gates will open an hour beforehand.
