The Dolphins were back on the field Tuesday for the 11th day of training camp 2025. Though clouds were nowhere in sight, the sky was filled with rainmakers.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa found wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Malik Washington for a pair of 50-yard touchdown strikes. Hill got behind the defense two more times but could not hook up with Tagovailoa as they took their shots against coverages calling for the long ball.
The scoring play from Hill was a carbon copy of the explosives Dolphins fan grew accustomed to over the last three season. He went streaking down the middle running under a perfectly placed ball from Tagovailoa. The second homerun could not have been placed any better to Washington if it were handed to him. Tagovailoa recognized a defense without safety help, Washington stacked the cornerback and accelerated through the pass en route to the end zone.
Quarterback Quinn Ewers dialed up a long ball of his own with fellow rookie, wide receiver Theo Wease, for a 30-yard score.
While the Dolphins offense made the big play, the red zone scores were tougher to come by. Miami cornerbacks Jack Jones, Mike Hilton and Storm Duck all had wins in coverage in condensed areas, but it was the concept of team defense that had the Miami quarterbacks double clutching.
“On the backend we have to be communicative especially in the red zone,” said safety Patrick McMorris. “Lot of moving pieces, especially with our offense, lot of motions and crossers. Just being able to communicate and making sure we’re on the right page, on the same page.”
The protection mostly held up for extended time, but there was nowhere to go with the football thanks to aggressive reroutes and quick-thinking safety play. McMorris and Elijah Campbell had strong showings both in coverage and playing the run from depth.
The beneficiary of all these coverage wins was the Miami pass rush. Defensive tackle Zach Sieler, fresh off his new contract extension, was in the backfield for a sack and two more pressures.
