2 North Carolinians sick with Salmonella after multistate outbreak :: WRAL.com

Public health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to specific eggs, according to the CDC. Two people in North Carolina have been affected so far.

The CDC said that on Wednesday, a company called Country Eggs, LLC recalled their large brown cage free “sunshine yolks” or “omega-3 golden yolk” eggs which were distributed between June 16 and July 9 in California and Nevada.

These specific eggs were packaged in retail cartons bearing names such as Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho and Nijiya Markets. The sell-by dates ranged from July 1 through Sept. 18.

As of Wednesday, 95 people had been infected with Salmonella, which had been reported in 14 states, including North Carolina. Eighteen people have been hospitalized, but there have not been any reported deaths.

The CDC said the true number of sick people is likely higher, and this outbreak may not have been limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.

In addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.

The CDC recommends checking your egg cartons and discarding them if they are under those recalled brands. They encourage washing items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled eggs.

Call your healthcare provider if you believe you are harboring severe Salmonella symptoms, such as:

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees
  • Diarrhea for more than three days that is not improving
  • Vomiting, dehydration
