It has now been almost a decade since last we saw MCU star and long-time James Bond favorite Tom Hiddleston embark on his own mission of espionage and action in The Night Manager. Now, we finally have our first look at what his long-awaited return to the role will look like with images from Season 2 of the acclaimed spy thriller having been released at last.
Coming courtesy of Vanity Fair, these new images offer our first look at Tom Hiddleston’s return as Jonathan Pine, a former military officer-turned-hotel night manager-turned-spy for British intelligence, with the actor looking every bit the perfect 007 replacement. The report reveals that The Night Manager Season 2 “picks up in the present day, eight years after the events of season one,” with Hiddleston reprising his role alongside Olivia Colman as MI6 intelligence officer Angela Burr, “who recruits Pine into espionage against an illegal arms-dealing operation.”
The first season was based on the 1993 novel of the same name by John le Carré, whose real name was David Cornwell. There is no second novel, meaning Season 2 will go off-book. le Carré’s son, Simon Cornwell, also returns to shepherd the series into its next era, and promises more corruption from the top following Season 1’s arms dealer Richard “Dickie” Roper, played by Hugh Laurie.
“Forty years ago, people would write movies where the punchline was, ‘and the corruption goes all the way to the top!’” Cornwell said. “Today, that’s the starting point.”
‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 Plot Has Been Revealed…
Alongside the images, further details regarding the direction of The Night Manager Season 2 have also been revealed. As per the report, the second season “finds Pine living under an alias as Alex Goodwin—a low-level MI6 officer running a quiet surveillance unit in London.”
“But a chance encounter with an old Roper mercenary thrusts Pine into a high-intensity new mission involving Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos (Babylon’s Diego Calva). On this new assignment, Pine meets Roxana Bolaños (Daisy Jones & the Six’s Emmy-nominated Camila Morrone), a businesswoman who reluctantly helps Pine permeate Teddy’s Colombian arms outfit.”
For Hiddleston, it’s worked in the show and the character’s favor that The Night Manager Season 2 has taken so long to emerge. “I’m honestly excited that it’s taken 10 years—the last 10 years in the world have been interesting,” the actor said. “Jonathan Pine is 10 years older, a few more scars on the outside, a few more on the inside.”
Olivia Colman, meanwhile, offered a few clues regarding her role in the series, revealing that her character, the Head of the Foreign Office’s International Enforcement Agency, Angela Burr, “hid away somewhere in the mountains for a nice, quiet life to keep her family safe.” But, of course, “she can’t help but get drawn back in.”
The Night Manager Season 2 is expected to be released in late 2025 or early 2026.
